The narrator, Meena is a rebellious schoolgirl with a vivid imagination. She tells lies, but is perceptive, sometimes compassionate, and a loyal friend.
Meena’s father is a caring, hard-working, educated family man, over-qualified for his job as an accountant. He is also a sensitive musician.
She is a gracious neighbour, teacher, and devoted wife and mother. She has strength of character, but misses India and her family, and almost has a breakdown.
Visiting from India, she bonds with Meena, appreciating her unconventional character. She speaks little English but makes herself understood and has a good sense of humour.
A manipulative secondary school girl, she likes to dominate her friends. She takes the lead, tells Meena about sex, and encourages her to shoplift.
