Comment
AO1: There is a clear sense from the opening that the candidate has a grasp of the whole play and of the question. The answer is shaped by an overview of which links together incidents throughout the play and each paragraph moves the argument forward. Writing is generally fluent with appropriate critical vocabulary.
AO2: Examples of structure, form and language are used to support the argument. Quotations are neatly integrated into the discussion and supported by analytical comments.
AO3: The candidate is aware that production choices, such as doubling parts, will affect interpretation. Alternative interpretations of Bottom's transformation are not only considered but used as the basis to introduce a further interpretation.
AO4: The question is illuminated by a number of contextual references, covering both the text and how it has been interpreted.
For an A* grade
- A sense of how the play was received at the time when it was first performed would enrich the comments on its dramatic success.
- At times, ideas could be elaborated on and taken a stage further – paragraphs begin in a very focused way but do no always finish strongly.
- A counter-argument could be touched upon.
