You need to be able to comment on characters’ use of unusual imagery.
Blanche tells Mitch about her soldier lovers: ‘Later the paddy-wagon would them up like ...’ (Scene Nine, p. 89).
Ask yourself: Why does Blanche use this rather odd simile for soldiers?
Possible answer: Blanche thinks of the young soldiers as simple and innocent, like daisies. There could also be a hint of soldiers being ‘mown down’ like daisies in war. She is making light of this episode in her life, in an almost reckless way, as if she knows that she has already lost Mitch, so she can say whatever she likes.
