Use of Language – Symbolism 1 of 2

You need to be able to identify symbolism and relate it to the play’s themes.

Blanche tells Eunice: ‘They told me to take a streetcar named   , and then transfer to one called   ’ (Scene One, p. 3).

Ask yourself: What is meant by this central symbol of the streetcar (a tram)?

Possible answer: A ‘streetcar’ suggests something used by ordinary people – more so than a limousine or even a taxi. It also implies something that carries you along, and from which you cannot get off until you reach a stop. It therefore works as a symbol for sexual desire – a commonplace but powerful and inescapable force.
