Use of Language – Symbolism 2 of 2

You need to be able to comment on recurring symbols in the play, such as candles.

Blanche tells Stella: ‘I hope candles are going to   in his life and I hope that his eyes are going to be like candles’ (Scene Eight, p. 79).

Ask yourself: Why do candles particularly appeal to Blanche?

Possible answer: Candles could be a symbol of life and human warmth – but especially of warmth that is short-lived and ‘blows out’, like Blanche’s relationships. Blanche also prefers to be seen by candlelight because it is ‘kind’ to her looks: it does not reveal her age.
