This is an excellent response, and close to achieving the very highest standard. Quotations are accurate and used with subtlety. Commentary shows close and resourceful engagement with texts. A strong sense of textual patterning is conveyed and there are useful comparisons of representations of speech in the two texts. Evidence is given of broad understanding of historical context. Firm grasp of both texts is clear and different ideas are drawn together to make a series of insightful and persuasive points. However an awareness of other readings and critical interpretations could have been stated more explicitly.
To improve the answer:
- Pay more consistent and explicit attention to the central claim of the question (AO1).
- Bring out relevant relationships between the text and specific literary or historical contexts (AO3).
- Show explicitly how one or more critical approaches can shed light on the novel (AO5).
