Comment

The answer is well structured and shows a high level of understanding with some confident interpretation. The set passage has been analysed in detail and the candidate has also shown very good knowledge of the novel as a whole, including an appropriate link to social context. This is particularly evident in the skilful selection of short quotations, embedded in the answer for support and illustration.

For Grades 8–⁠9

  • Use precise terminology when analysing language, e.g. ‘adjectives’ rather than ‘words’ to show deeper understanding.
  • Strengthen your discussion of effects by referring to the readers and describing their responses.
  • Consider how ‘ignorance’ relates to Scrooge and the reader, as well as to the children.
