Comment

The essay is relevant, with some well-chosen supporting references, but these often need explanation. Overall, there is focus on characters and relationships (mainly Mickey and Linda), even though this is sometimes simplistic. There is some relevant use of context linked to characters’ actions, and some awareness that there is a writer making choices.

For Grade 4

  • Ensure that supporting references are clearly explained and linked back to the focus of the question, not just point + evidence.
  • Write more about how Russell presents the characters and their behaviour in love: how do the characters show or say they love each other? Remember that the characters are not ‘real people’ – the writer has created them.
  • Avoid very long sentences that make the argument hard to follow. Commas do not replace full stops in writing clear sentences.
