Comment

The answer examines the presentation of the relationship between the two women effectively, demonstrating some detailed awareness of the text and the ability to select appropriate quotations in support of the argument. There is confident reference to the themes of the play in the points made, and the vocabulary used is precise and well chosen. The later stages of the play are covered in less convincing detail, however.

For Grades 8–9

  • Provide more detailed analysis of how the language used demonstrates Mrs Lyons’s deteriorating mental health.
  • Ensure that the later part of the play in Act Two is given sufficient attention.
  • Reintroduce the writer’s methods in the conclusion to strengthen the focus on the question.
