Comment

The essay makes some good points, but some of them warrant further explanation or development. Generally, this is a good answer showing a solid grasp of the text and the theme of secrecy. A tighter structure would help, as sometimes it lists examples of secrecy without fully showing their effect. These could be tied together to make a better argument.

For Grades 8–9

  • Extend the point about us thinking Hyde is a clever criminal to say Stevenson misleads us here and elsewhere about what the hidden information is, and how this works in the novel.
  • Extend the reference to the Bible story to say what effect Stevenson achieves by alluding to it.
  • Tighten the structure and increase the range of vocabulary used.
