Comment

This answer demonstrates very confident understanding of the ideas in the passage and also how they are explored elsewhere in the novel. Evidence is skilfully embedded into the response and there is a strong focus on the task throughout. The written expression is appropriate throughout. More focus on how the writer uses character and language to present ideas would help. Also, although the use of embedded quotations is extremely fluent, evidence that these have been fully understood could be more convincing.

For Grades 8-9

  • Focus more on the characters as conscious constructs used by the writer to develop ideas.
  • Focus in detail on the effects of particular word choices and the effect of imagery.
  • Add information on what the novel shows about attitudes towards religion in that society and period.
