Comment
This candidate has understood and responded to the text, albeit in an over-simplified manner. There is an immediacy in the response though the informal style and frequent tense changes prevent the award of a higher grade. The content is almost entirely descriptive, a retelling of events with too much repetition and too little attempt at analysis. Quotations are brief (usually single word) and only once does this candidate try to explain the literary process. References to the theme of marriage elsewhere in the novel are seriously inadequate and little attempt is made to summarise ideas or offer a conclusion.
For Grade 4
- Structure essay more clearly; discuss the extract first then other presentations of marriage in the novel.
- Identify themes; avoid just retelling the story. A more formal style will help you express your ideas.
- Use some longer quotations and explain how they work rather than what they say.
