Genre and Structure – Music 1 of 2

You should be aware of how Williams uses music and songs as structural devices.

While Stanley tells Stella what he has found out about Blanche’s sexual liaisons, Blanche sings: ‘It’s only a paper   , Just as phony as it can be – But it wouldn’t be make-believe If you   in me!’ (Scene Seven, p. 72).

Ask yourself: How does this juxtaposition create dramatic tension?

Possible answer: This is dramatic irony, in that the audience can hear Blanche’s happy singing at the same time as hearing the news that will end her happiness. The lyrics reflect her belief in the power of fantasy, as well as her hopes of marrying Mitch. They contrast with Stanley’s brutal realism.
