Genre and Structure – Dramatic scene endings 1 of 2

You should be able to comment on the play’s dramatic scene endings.

Blanche tells Stanley: ‘The boy – the boy   . ... I’m afraid I’m – going to be sick!’ (Scene One, p. 15).

Ask yourself: Why does this line come at the end of Scene One?

Possible answer: The placing of the line shows that the event to which Blanche refers is going to be very significant in the play, and that Blanche is still so much affected by her husband’s death that she can suddenly become physically ill at the thought of it. This leaves the audience wondering how this will affect the story.
