Genre and Structure – Dramatic scene endings 2 of 2

You should be able to comment on how the dramatic scene endings create expectations.

Blanche exclaims: ‘Sometimes – there’s   – so quickly!’ (Scene Six, p. 68).

Ask yourself: What expectations does this create in the audience?

Possible answer: The intensely hopeful line comes as a great surprise at the end of a scene which begins in a deliberately dreary way. Blanche suddenly feels that there could be hope for her – she might marry Mitch. The audience may share her hope, at the same time as knowing that she is probably doomed, thanks to Stanley.
